Rui Campos put himself in command of the Execuline
Shelby Can-Am championship by winning the first race
comfortably and taking a hard fought second place in
race two.
A clean start saw Campos take the lead but on lap three
2007 champion Darryn Lobb (DK Woodcraft) suffered a
broken driveshaft and the field was forced to take
avoiding action which gave Campos (Hugo Boss) the early
break. Then Dave Beattie (Dura) tapped title contender
Chris Hart (Hi-Q Plettenberg Bay) into a spin and both
retired which further delayed the pack. More drama was
provided by Brian Algar (Firedart) who spun and delayed
Execuline backed Jennifer Murray.
Campos was clear of all the drama and went on to take a
six second win ahead of Alan Eve (Sunshine Testing) with
2006 champion Ruan Pretorius in third place. Fourth went
to Sean Greve (Vulcania Reinforcing) while Murray worked
hard to keep Guy Botterill (Fragram Tools) at bay and
take fifth.
The grid for race two was based on the top eight fastest
laps of the first race in a reverse order and it was
Bedfordview racer Thomas Reib who led all the way to
give the Intertrans Oils team its first race win. It was
also Reib's first success at this level and he was just
over three seconds clear of Campos who had worked hard
to pass Algar.
Greve, Pretorius and Lobb completed the top six in what
was an entertaining and close race.
Former champion Robbie Wolk took a step closer to the
Investchem Formula Ford title by taking the Chemical
Logistics supported Mygale to two dominant wins. Mathew
Merton (Matsam Supplies Mygale) drove well to claim
second place each time while Nicholas van Weely
(Magnificent Paints Van Diemen) survived a clash with
Gerard Peters to claim third in the opening race less
than a second behind Merton.
David Veringa (Bravo Holdings Mygale) was fourth with
Werner Scholtz (Motorvia Van Diemen) fifth ahead of
impressive Formula Ford debutant James Temple (Investchem
Mygale).
A great scrap for third in race two saw Veringa get the
verdict ahead of Scholtz with Zimbabwean Gerard Peters (Petro-Oil
Zim Mygale) driving well to claim fifth after starting
from the back and suffering a first lap spin after a
tangle with Allen Meyer (Les Donnees Mygale) while
Temple impressed again and was delighted with another
sixth place finish.
Over 30 cars lined up for the Altech Porsche Unlimited
race and it was Franz Pretorius who drove the ex Le Mans
Porsche 956 to a win with only a single second in hand
over Toby Venter's neatly driven 911 GT2. Almost half a
minute behind was the well-sorted red Lotus Elise of
Charl Joubert.
Jeremy Pougnet took fourth in the first of the Forza
Racing Ferrari 360 Challenge cars with teammate Christo
Lindeque next and chased home by the similar car driven
by Andrew Miller.
Race two saw Pretorius retire from the fray at half
distance which left Venter to take an uncontested win
although TV heart-throb Oscar de Oliviera drove the
wheels of his Ferrari in chasing him and Pougnet did
well to finish less than a second behind them.
With Joubert also retiring, Lindique was fourth with Rod
Cole-Edwards (Porsche 911 RSR) glued to his rear wing
while Miller got sixth a fraction ahead of Porsche 911
RSR mounted Markus Minhold.
Gavin Ramsay clinched the Altech Kawasaki ZX10 Cup after
finishing second behind Gavin Lightfoot in the first
heat. Championship rival Greg Dreyer crashed out early
in the race which handed Ramsay the title. "Both Gavin
and Greg had crashes this year which made it easier for
me," said Ramsay who has been competing for over
30-years.
