results, but was given a 30 sec penalty, see below...
27/06/09 -
Johannesburg, Saturday A slice of South African
motorsport history went into the record books via the
Shez Show at round five of the WesBank Super Series
national championship meeting at Kyalami today.
Reigning South African Superbike champion Sheridan
Morais, known to his friends as Shez, became the first
rider to take a clean sweep in both the Interfile SA
Superbike and Interfile SA Supersport championship
categories on the same day. Morais, on the Emtek Racing
Kawasaki, took both race wins in the Superbike category
winning the second race by the skin of his teeth and
romped away with both Supersport wins.
In the Supersport category Morais now has 10 wins from
10 starts and simply decimated the field in both races.
Behind Morais a determined Dylan White (White Aluminium
Yamaha) took a brace of seconds with Eddy Alberts (Race
Nation Honda) and Ronan Quarmby (Interfile Yamaha)
sharing third places.
In the opening Superbike race Morais shadowed the
experienced veteran, Lance Isaacs, on the Portable Shade
Honda, before making a move. Former champion Arushen
Moodley, on a second PS Honda, took the final podium
position with Greg Gildenhuys (Race Nation Honda) fourth
and Clinton Seller (BMG Yamaha) fifth.
It was race two that got the pulses racing, and it also
had a sting in the tail. Once again Morais stalked the
veteran Isaacs and the end product was an explosive
final lap.
Morais sneaked past Isaacs on the last corner and looked
to have won by less than a wheel. The timing system gave
the win to Isaacs by two thousandths of a second, but
this was later reversed and the win given to Morais by a
thousandth of a second.
Then came the sting in the tail.
*Isaacs was excluded
from the results (not excluded, but given a 30sec
penalty.ed) for a technical infringement and Gildenhuys and Robert Portman, on the second Emtek
Kawasaki, found themselves on the podium with Team
Yamaha pair Shawn Whyte and Chris Leeson fourth and
fifth.
The Auby family, as they have done for most of the
season, stole the WesBank V8 Supercar honours with three
time champion Hennie Groenewald having another unhappy
day. Race one went to teenager Brandon Auby (ELT
International Jaguar) and his father, Deon, won race two
in the ELT Holden.
In the opening race the younger Auby led home Groenewald
(Timken Holden) and team-mate Richard Pinard in the
Timken Jaguar. Auby senior was fourth ahead of another
son, championship leader Marc, who was later hit with a
30 second penalty for a race infringement which dropped
him to 11th.
The second race saw the inverted grid system come into
action. Auby senior came from the middle of the field to
lead home the steady Danie Correia (Liqui Moly Chev
Corvette) and son Marc.
This time around Brandon was not so lucky and a lap one
puncture ruined his race. Groenewald also picked up a
puncture on lap one and slid off the track taking Pinard
with him and both retired on the spot.
Two interesting Bridgestone Production Car races saw
plenty of action with provisional results giving the
wins to reigning champion Johan Fourie (Indy Oil Audi)
and Michael Stephen in the Xtreme Team Audi. The last
three laps of the first race were run under the safety
car after Class T contender Gary Formato (Ford Racing
Nandos Ford Focus) slid off the circuit, with Fourie
leading home Melvill Priest (VMP Audi) and Shaun
Watson-Smith in the second Xtreme Team Audi.
There were a series of early incidents in race two with
Class T championship leader Graeme Nathan (Indy Oil/Kaye
Eddie VW Golf) the major victim. At the front of the
field Stephen just held off Priest with Watson-Smith
third.
Priest was later penalised 10 seconds and dropped to
sixth with Watson-Smith and Fourie on the podium. With
Class A championship leader Anthony Taylor (Afrox BMW)
not having a happy day, the title chase is now
delicately poised.
The Class T wins were shared by Nathan and Graham Donker
in the Mini/Maxi Panelbeaters VW Golf. Cape Town veteran
Kosie Swanepoel (Barnetts Toyota RunX) again dominated
Class B with a brace of wins.
Teenager Tasmin Pepper (PG Glass/Pepper Racing FVW)
recalled the days of former SA champions Judy
Witter-Charlton and Desire Wilson when she scored her
first ever national championship win in the first
Formula Volkswagen race. Although it was a slightly
fortuitous win with Cristiano Morgado (City of Durban
FVW) penalised 30 seconds for a jump start, young Pepper
drove an impeccable race.
Wesleigh Orr (Bravo/Teague Distributors FVW) romped away
with heat two to win by 10 seconds from another Auby,
this time third son Jimmy, in the Crystal Pier Logistics
FVW, and Simon Moss in the Southern Sun/Oakley FVW.
Pepper and Paolo da Cunha (SAM Racing/Tubular Tech FVW)
rounded out the top five.
The Engen VW Cup wins were shared by Bryan Morgan
(Timken VW Polo) and Champion VW Polo teenager Devin
Robertson. Morgan took the opening heat ahead of
Robertson and another teenager, Gennaro Bonafede, in the
second Champion car.
Race two went to Robertson ahead of Matthew Hodges in
the PG Glass VW Polo. Miguel Pasqualli (Xtreme Team VW
Polo) moved up a place when team-mate Kosie Weyers was
excluded from the results, and Bonafede moved up a place
into fifth.
