ANONYMOUS OWNER WILL SHOW ONE OF THE WORLD’S RAREST CARS IN PRETORIA THIS SUNDAY

26/07/10 - This Sundays Cars in the Park, held on the first day in August, 2010, will see one of the world’s most sought-after Alfa Romeos make its appearance.

The Zagato-bodied Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Supercharged is believed to be one of just two still in exiistence with this particular bodywork. It will undoubtedly be one of the stars of a show that will include a 1909 Renault and a 1909 Star, as well as some 2 000 veteran, vintage and classic cars of all descriptions.

The owner of the Alfa 6C, who wishes to remain anonymous, has informed the organisers that the other remaining Zagato Roadster from the 1930 model year is in the Alfa Romeo museum in Malan. The six-cylinder engine was the design work of the famous Vittorio Jano, who later designed many famous engines for Enzo Ferrari.

This years Cars in the Park, held at the Zwartkops Raceway south west of Pretoria (on the R55, near the suburb of Erasmia), is the 28th rendition of this annual event started by the Pretoria Old Motor Club in the early 1980s.

One of the reasons for its success is that it attracts a complete spectrum of “special interest” cars, ranging from fully restored cars from the early 1900s, through to a wide variety of 1930s vintage machines, motorcycles, hotrods, musclecars, drag racers, military vehicles and many more varieties.

“The main focus of this event is passion,” says organiser Theo Stander of the POMC. “We have over 100 clubs participating, some of whom will host displays of up to 30 cars. These clubs include the Alfa Romeo Club, which will celebrate 100 years of the marque, the Volvo Club, the DKW Club, the Borgward Club, the Renault Club, the Ford Escort Club, the Buick Club, the Studebaker Club, the various Volkswagen clubs, and many more

“Musclecars have become huge on the collectable car scene recently, and vistors can expect to see dozens of Mustangs, Camaros and Dodge Chargers. Hot rodding is also huge, and we’ll see street rods, custom pick-ups, and of course the modified Fords, Golfs, and all manner of strange street machines out in force.”

VISITOR INFO :
While special interest cars (judged at the discretion of the POMC marshals) will be admitted to the display area, drivers of ordinary cars will be catered for with secure parking.

Admission prices for the Cars in the Park 2010 are R50 for adults and children under 12 free. To get there take the R55, which runs South-North from Kyalami to Laudium, and Zwartkops is on the left, just before the turn-off to Erasmia.

Alternately, one can continue straight on the William Nichol Drive from Randburg in a northerly direction, passing the Fourways complex and proceeding straight on towards Erasmia. Just after the Erasmia township, is the alternative entrance to Zwartkops on the right hand side. This is a good alternative route to avoid traffic build-up.
